PHL digital economy: $40 billion by 2025, despite Omicron

The Omicron surge doesn’t dampen expectations that the Philippine internet economy will hit $40 billion in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV) by 2025.

P2 billion feared lost to scams, fraud – BSP

Cybercriminals have taken advantage of more Filipinos shifting to online banking and digital payments amid the prolonged pandemic, thus the need to better protect consumers from fraud, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno said on Monday.

From 2019 to 2021, consumers lodged before the BSP complaints involving a total of P2 billion worth of financial transactions, some of which involved scams as well as hacking and phishing incidents, Diokno told a Senate hearing on the proposed financial consumer protection act.

BIR forges ahead with digital transformation

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will pursue 49 measures to improve its digital platform in response to the transitioning behavior of taxpayers to complete their transactions online.

The BIR yesterday reported that it had begun implementing last year at least 14 of the projects geared toward expanding its payment channels for the benefit of taxpayers compelled by the pandemic to adapt digital tools.

Global Payments looks to expand clients, services

GLOBAL PAYMENTS, Inc. is looking to expand its market in the country by targeting more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and offering additional services, including quick response (QR) payments.

The US-headquartered payments firm is providing services to more than 8,000 SMEs in the country, Global Payments Philippines Country Head Brent Joseph Tiongson said.
